The main decision: ice tub vs chiller unit

  • Ice/manual-fill tubs. A well-insulated barrel or tub that you fill with cold water and top up with ice. Cheapest option upfront, but ice costs add up if you plunge regularly, and holding a stable temperature is harder — especially in an Australian summer.
  • Chiller (refrigeration) units. A tub with a built-in refrigeration unit that actively cools and holds water at a set temperature, without needing ice. Higher upfront cost, but no ongoing ice expense and consistent temperature control year-round.

If you’ll use it more than occasionally, the running cost and consistency of a chiller usually offsets the higher purchase price over time — but for occasional use, a well-insulated manual tub is a reasonable lower-commitment starting point.

What actually affects quality

  • Insulation. Double-walled, foam-insulated tubs hold temperature far better than thin plastic or inflatable options, which matters most for ice/manual-fill tubs but still affects a chiller’s running efficiency.
  • Filtration and water treatment. Look for a built-in filtration and ozone or UV sanitising system if you’re planning to reuse the same water for more than a session or two — without it, water needs to be changed far more often, which gets expensive and inconvenient.
  • Chiller capacity. For chiller units, check the specified temperature range and how quickly it can bring the tub back down after use — cheaper units can take much longer to recover between sessions on a hot day.
  • Build material. Rotomolded plastic or stainless steel tubs tend to be more durable outdoors than PVC/inflatable options, which are more portable but wear out faster with regular use and UV exposure.
  • Noise and placement. Chiller compressors run continuously to hold temperature and can be noticeably loud — check the decibel rating if it’ll sit near a bedroom or a shared wall.
  • Electrical safety. Any unit with an electric chiller or pump running near water should carry relevant Australian electrical safety certification and be installed with appropriate circuit protection (a qualified electrician can confirm this).

Before you buy

  • Decide whether you’ll plunge often enough that ice costs would exceed the price difference to a chiller within a year or two.
  • Check outdoor vs indoor placement requirements — chillers need airflow and often a power point nearby.
  • Ask about water capacity and fill time, especially if you’re on tank water or have low water pressure.
