Infrared vs traditional: the buying-decision version

The core trade-off is the same one that applies to studio sessions (see our infrared vs traditional guide), but a few things matter more once you’re buying rather than booking:

  • Power supply. Most 1–2 person infrared cabins run on a standard household circuit. Larger infrared cabins and most traditional electric heaters need a dedicated circuit — check the unit’s amperage against what an electrician can run to the install location before you buy, not after.
  • Installation. Infrared cabins are typically flat-packed and can often be assembled indoors in a few hours. Traditional saunas — especially wood-fired or larger electric ones — more often need a dedicated space (a spare room, garage corner, or purpose-built outdoor structure) and sometimes professional electrical or gas work.
  • Running cost. Infrared panels generally draw less power than heating an entire room’s air to sauna temperature, so day-to-day running costs tend to be lower for infrared — though this varies by unit size and how often you use it.

What actually affects quality

Whatever format you choose, these are the things worth comparing across options rather than taking a brand’s word for:

  • Wood and construction. Solid timber (commonly cedar, hemlock or basswood) that’s been kiln-dried resists warping and off-gassing better than cheaper composite panels. Ask what the interior panelling is actually made of, not just what the exterior looks like.
  • Heater type and coverage (infrared). Full-spectrum panels (near, mid and far infrared) cover more of the infrared range than budget far-infrared-only panels. Panel placement matters too — more panels at different heights heat more of your body evenly.
  • Heater wattage and rock volume (traditional). For a traditional sauna, heater wattage needs to match room volume — an undersized heater will struggle to reach temperature and take a long time to recover between uses.
  • Warranty and local support. Because these are higher-ticket, mostly imported items, check what’s actually covered locally (parts, labour, how long) rather than just the headline warranty length — and whether the seller has an Australian service presence at all.
  • Certification. Look for relevant electrical safety certification (e.g. an Australian regulatory approval mark) on any unit running mains power — this matters more than sauna-specific marketing claims.

Before you buy

  • Measure the install space and confirm ceiling height (many units need at least ~2m).
  • Confirm your power supply can handle the unit, or budget for an electrician.
  • Check the return policy — sauna purchases are hard to “try before you buy” outside a studio session.
